An exciting opportunity has arisen at Skegness Aquarium for an experienced Senior Aquarist to progress within our passionate and busy team.

As Senior Aquarist, you will play a vital team leader role in maintaining the exhibits to the highest possible standards and ensuring that they surpass the expectations of our visitors, with animal welfare as the priority. You will also be encouraged to work on your own initiative in coming up with exciting new ideas and concepts for our displays, improvements to husbandry and conservation work.

As Senior Aquarist, you will work as a team leader alongside our other Senior Aquarist, reporting to the Curator. You will have complementary responsibilities with our other Senior Aquarist and your leadership skills will be key to help manage and lead the team to achieve the highest standards of animal care and husbandry.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading the team by example in daily husbandry tasks and maintenance of the displays, maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare and striving to make improvements
  • Monitoring animal behaviour and health, liaising with the vets independently where necessary
  • Ensuring compliance with our site’s policies and protocols
  • Delivering basic veterinary care & treatments under guidance from the Curator and IZVG vets
  • Life support systems (LSS) maintenance
  • Daily record keeping and ownership of reviewing certain records to ensure effective record keeping
  • Guest interpretation and interaction

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum two years’ paid experience working within the aquarium industry
  • Dive qualification of a minimum of PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent, and be able to obtain a HSE Dive Medical
  • Qualification/degree in marine biology, animal care or similar
  • A keen passion for the aquatic world and it’s conservation
  • Experience of tropical marine aquatic husbandry and a sound knowledge of aquarium life support systems
  • Proven ability to work under own initiative with high attention to detail but also a strong team player
  • Excellent leadership skills, always leading by example
  • Excellent communication skills, personable and inclusive of others and their ideas
  • Confidence speaking in public and interacting with visitors
  • Excellent record keeping skills and basic knowledge of the British zoo licensing procedure
  • Experience and knowledge of basic plumbing
  • Passionate about delivering the highest standards throughout the work environment

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience of husbandry for terrestrial reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates
  • Experience in providing basic veterinary treatments and care under Vets’ and Curator’s guidance
  • Experience in using the IZVG AHEF system
  • Experience working with corals and terrestrial invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles
  • Experience developing conservation initiatives
  • DMZAA would be beneficial but is not required

What’s Included

This is a full-time position with a minimum of 42hrs per week for a competitive hourly rate.

This includes working regular weekends, bank holidays and school holidays as well as being on call for out of hour’s emergencies and working sometimes early or late to meet business and animal care demands.
